Another sad and shocking news has been reported by Daily trust that a suspect, who allegedly confessed to strangling his one-day old grandson to death because he does not want a “bastard” in his family, is in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Lafia, after he was arrested by men of the state command.
Alanana Ayuba, 35, a native of Angwan Tashi in Obi Local Government Area, was arrested on Tuesday, following a tip off which led men of the command to his residence in Doma, command’s spokesman, Soji Alabi, said yesterday. “The baby was found by the river side by neighbours who informed the civil defence”, he said.
He said Ayuba confessed during interrogation. “He confessed that he actually killed the baby boy by strangulating him because he does not want a bastard baby in his house. He was subsequently arrested by the officers and men of the division and brought to the state headquarters for further investigation”, according to the spokesman.
He said the suspect who pleaded for forgiveness further informed the civil defence that he killed his grandson in order to free the mother (his 19-year old daughter), from burden, so she can return to school to complete her education.
The mother of the baby, Deborah Alanana, 19, claimed that she was not aware of the father’s intention until she heard the cry of the baby and later found out that he was dead, Alabi said in a statement.
State Commandant of the corps, Nweze Emmanuel Okemini who paraded the suspect in Lafia, described the act as heinous and wondered why people could not respect the sanctity of human life.
He said that the matter will be thoroughly investigated for onward prosecution.
