Gunmen rob, kill hospital director in Katsina - Daily Trust

                                      

Gunmen yesterday robbed and shot dead the Assistant Director, Finance, of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, Alhaji Kabir Yahaya.
Fifty Six year old Yahaya was shot in the head by the assailants after collecting an undisclosed amount of money from him. It was gathered that the attackers also robed his wives of valuables, including jewelleries and phones.

Daily Trust learnt that Mallam Muhammad Nasiru, a guard at the house and eldest son of the deceased, Zaharaddeen Kabir Yahaya, were rushed to hospital following injuries they sustained from attack.

A close friend of the deceased, Alhaji Baba Ado told Daily Trust that the gunmen, who were about 20 in number, stormed the residence of the deceased located in Tudun-Matawalle quarters in Katsina metropolis at 2:45am and left at 3:20am.

“They shot Alhaji Kabir in the head after they collected money and other valuables from him. I was sleeping in one of the rooms with the deceased’s eldest son, Zaharaddeen Kabir when the gunmen
invaded the house, and they had on them, sophisticated guns. After gaining entrance into the house, they came into our room and started hitting us with guns, asking us to lead them to where Alhaji Kabir keeps his jewelleries, but I told them that he (Alhaji) is a civil servant, and does not deal in gold,” he said.
Daily Trust gathered that last year, some gunmen invaded the deceased’s residence, but were chased away by several gunshots he fired at them. It was also gathered that during yesterday’s attack, late Yahaya fired some shots before he was killed.

A witness said the robbers also fired shots at policemen, who arrived the scene, following a distress call by a neighbour. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state’s command, ASP Shehu Koko Muhammad confirmed the incident saying, “We suspect that it was an assassination”.
Muhammad added that investigation into the matter has commenced.

On his part, the Chief Medical Director, Katsina Federal Medical Centre, Dr. Umar Farouk Abdulmajid described the incident as shocking, saying, “The deceased was a peaceful and hardworking staff”.
Speaking through the acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Sulaiman Bello Muhammad, he said late Yahaya worked in the hospital for 10 years. The deceased left behind four wives and 26 children.
