Lagos Train passenger delivers baby boy at Ido terminus

A passenger on the Lagos-Ijoko Mass Transit Train (MTT), Mrs Tosin Oladejo, on Monday delivered a baby boy at the Ido terminus, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the woman, who boarded the train at Ijoko, Ogun, gave birth at about 7.35 a.m., shortly after getting out of the train.

After the delivery, the Ido terminus was filled with joyful songs as the other passengers started praising God for her safe delivery.

Oladejo, a petty trader at Idumota, Lagos, who resides at Ijoko and shuttles the 30-km route almost daily, told NAN that there was no sign that her baby was due before she left home.

“I felt no sign before I left home in the morning; otherwise, I would not have left home. It was shortly after I dropped at Ido terminus that the feeling for delivery started and the baby came out so fast,’’ she said.

Oladejo, who already has two children, disclosed that immediately after she delivered the little boy, the other passengers took her and the baby to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

After the delivery, some passengers donated cash gifts to the woman and prayed for the baby. Some of the passengers even went ahead to name the baby Omo Train (Train Baby).

The mass transit train is being run by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

An official of the NRC, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that if the woman had delivered the baby inside the train, the corporation would have paid for her medical bill and provided her with her immediate needs.

The official, however, rejoiced with the mother and baby, noting that the NRC was happy that it was a safe delivery.

He also commended other train passengers for the assistance they rendered to ensure the safe delivery of the baby.

NAN reports that the 4.15 p.m. train ride, which say the mother returning home with her bundle of joy on Monday, was turned into some sort of carnival as some passengers danced round the coaches to celebrate the new born.
