Sensing that President Jonathan had pulled a fast one on him by tacitly disqualifying him from the 2015 PDP presidential race since he and President Jonathan's hand picked favourite for the PDP chairmanship come from the same state (and the party chairman and the presidential candidate cannot come from the same state) the wily Atiku Abubakar had
pulled all his strings to see to it that his zone, the Northeast, rejected Bamanga Tukur in favourite of Musa Babayo, the outgoing National Secretary of the PDP.
Babayo scored 14 votes to beat Tukur who got 2 votes, with Alhaji Ibrahim Bunu and Dr Shettima Mustapha also getting 2 votes each. Former Bauchi governor Ahmadu Adamu Mua’zu and outgoing PDP publicity secretary Rufai Alkali scored 1 vote each.
It was a replay of the "do or die" politics perfected by Atiku and his former boss, president Obasanjo as Atiku knew that if Bamanaga Tukur had emerged as the PDP chair then all hope was lost for him to contest under the PDP banner in 2015 hence by hook or crook he had to stop Tukur!
In order not to be found out as being the hidden finger behind the success of Babayo, Atiku travelled to Dubai for the duration of the exercise and id expected to return tomorrow.
However, all is not yet lost for Tukur as what Babayo got was merely an endorsement by the Northeast caucus of the PDP. the actual election of the PDP chairman would occur at Eagles Square on Saturday the 24th March were the South South and Southeast governors and delegates are expected to vote for Tukur.
As for the Southwest governors, they do not have a dog in the fight and may go in the direction pointed by former president Obasanjo who is known to have had a clash with Tukur while e was president. But it is expected that Obasanjo might bury his elephantine capacity for revenge to checkmate Atiku by urging is delegates to vote for Tukur.
For those who know Obasanjo, he likes to serve revenge as a cold dish. So even if his delegates support Tukur, the man may still receive the sting of the scorpion after he has finished the task of check aging Atiku
I still don't like Tukur. He is too old to be Chairman now but he is going to get it, as the president and former president will support him.
