Authorities of the Eastern Naval Command have dragged an official of the Economic and Finance Crime Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Obase Mordi to the magistrate court Calabar, Cross River state.
Captain Udeagwu alleged that the EFCC official in company of her brother, one Essien Ewa had on August 27, 2011, organized people suspected to be cultists to attack the naval rating for allegedly refusing to allow her to either drive in to its premises or pack in front of the gate.
He said that as a result of the behavior of the said EFCC personnel and the assault meted out to the naval rating, the force decided to take the matter to the police where the EFCC official and her brother were arrested and later placed on bail, but incidentally, the official allegedly jumped the bail.
For allegedly jumping bail, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police dragged the EFCC personnel to the magistrate court in Calabar in the suit No. MC/871/2011, on Tuesday, March 20, 2011, but the case was adjourned as the accused person, Mrs. Mordi was not in the court and the prosecutor, Police Constable Mercy Okon was not in court when the case was mentioned.
Udeagwu maintained that the Navy decided to challenge the matter in court to demonstrate their loyalty to constituted authority, saying, “We want to demonstrate that we are Law abiding.”
The Command’s Legal Officer, Capt. Ibrahim Chonoko on his own part said in line with the President’s transformation agenda, the Navy decided to pursue the case vigorously in order to protect the fundamental human rights of its personnel.
He said the decision of the magistrate court at the end of the case would determine the next line of action to be taken by the Navy, but, however, added “We now want to prove that we can also go to court after being assaulted.” News Courtesy Vanguard Newspaper
