Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi
FORMER Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi said, yesterday. In his words Professor Akinyemi noted that things have never been as bad as they are now in Nigeria. He said ‘’but if the truth be told, and we owe ourselves the truth, things have never been as bad as they are now. Some have said that these times remind them of the darkness before the civil war, but I believe that it is worse than those times".
‘’Nigeria has never been bad as she is today as it’s the least developed among the oil producing nations.”
He also joins his voice in the call for a convocation of a Soveriegn National Conference “I am aware of the genesis of the concept of Sovereign National Conference and the fact that the term sovereign had come in public perception to signify the exercise of governmental powers even while a government is in place".
According to Vanguard Newspaper he went further “To my understanding, the Nigerian proponents of the Sovereign National Conference had never intended for the Conference to exercise some or all the powers of the government of the day".
‘’Will the national conference lead to the disintegration of Nigeria? I can give a firm and categorical answer. No. The factors are simply not there".
‘’Let me start off by saying that this country is at a crossroad. The road that we take and the roads untaken will decide our future. Of course, this is not the first time that Nigeria will find itself at a crossroad".
“I have used these broad strokes on the national canvass to indicate that being at crossroad is not new to Nigeria. We have been at several crossroads before now. But if the truth be told, and we owe ourselves the truth, things have never been as bad as they are now. Some have said that these times remind them of the darkness before the civil war but I believe that it is worse than those times.
‘’Let me surprise you by my first choice. The greatest danger to this nation is posed by not only the wide disparity between the super rich and the poor but by the utter poverty of the poor. The poor live a life of despair, a life of hopelessness and a life of deprivation.
“When you disaggregate Nigeria’s poor status, how divided our nation is becomes glaring. It is estimated that 54.1per cent (a total of 81.5m) live in “multidimensional” poverty”.
Words of wisdom, I just hope they listen and put the interest of Nigerians first.
