Primary Schools In Zamfara State Run Under Trees And In Mosques

Curled from Daily Post reports:

According to findings of the Zamfara State Primary Education Assessment Committee, many primary schools in Zamfara State do not have a single structure, they operate under trees, in makeshift structures and in mosques. The Chaiman of the committee Professor Tukur Adamu when presenting its report to the state Governor, said virtually all schools in the state are at various stages of dilapidation. He said there are inadequate classrooms, office accommodation, furniture, recreational facilities, libraries, learning materials
and staff houses. According to the committee, the Gross Enrolment Rate (GER) for male pupils in primary schools in the state stood at 42.47 per cent while GER for the female is 28.6 per cent.

He said there is a marked difference in enrolment rate between urban and rural areas, adding that while classes are overcrowded in urban schools, in the rural schools, the classes are virtually empty.
The committee also discovered that out of the 8,660 teaching staff in the state, only 3,113 which is equivalent to 35.95 per cent are qualified to teach.
“The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is used as a scholarship board for the training of the privileged ones in the name of ‘ staff on course’, while the idea of staff loan is grossly abused to the extent that staff are purportedly posted to non existing organisations,” he said.
